Happy New Year from James

Greetings Western Section Members and a Happy Holiday Season to you all. james LeeI am looking forward to the many challenges we will face in the coming year as well as those in the years that will follow. I am thankful and honored you have allowed me to serve The Western Section and The American Bridge Association in the capacity of WSVP for this period of time. Building a bigger and stronger WS is the vision expressed to me by our team during this election campaign. A bigger and stronger WS is accomplished, I believe, at the individual club level, inspired by club presidents. Bigger means more members, stronger suggest developing assets that allow us to carry out our mandates. Bigger and stronger are simple words that will require a real collective effort by those of us in the WS who love this game and believe in the ABA.

Less than half of the section membership voted in the November Las Vegas election. The VP numbers were 94 to 49, a clear majority indicating a desire for new direction.

  • Our team will promise confidence and leadership
  • Full transparency, no hidden agendas
  • Work tirelessly to resolve divisive issues and create harmony
  • Communicate effectively with the executive board relaying all decisions and suggestions to the membership body
  • Develop a strong, visionary, problem solving team
  • Follow ABA/WS Constitution and By-Laws and all guide lines prescribed to this office

Soon I will contact executive officers, committee chairmen, as well as club presidents and key section members regarding a time and place for our initial meeting. In the past the hosts of the February Grade A game in San Diego has graciously provided meeting accommodations. Please come filled with enthusiasm and positive ideas on the direction of the WS. Thank You

Sincerely,

James Lee

Grade A weekend with the LABU

The LABU's “Grade A Weekend” was Friday, Saturday and Sunday July 8-9th -10th with each day more exciting than the day before. With generous hospitality every day the planners made sure the food was out of site... and ABA bridge players know when you eat well you definitely play well.

When we read about the winners of our Grade A event we recognize the names. After all we've seen many of them lots of times. This time was no different except for one thing...we had 8 tables of new players...newbies. (yeah!) Just ponder that statement if you will. 8....8...8 tables of newbies... with our veteran players we filled the room. The raw numbers do not knock your socks off but when you consider the economic climate I think it looks pretty darn good despite the ailing economy.

We were graced by Bridge players from San Diego, Las Vegas, and Santa Maria, including president of Las Vegas Desert Wins, James Lee and President of San Diego Aztecs, Jewel Daniels-McDowell.

When Stephanie Young became LABU President it was like an Angel being sent to motivate, and take charge of the Los Angeles arm of the ABA. The national is now trying to claim their rights to her but I guarantee we will not let that happen. The Grade A weekend was just another example of her magnificent administrative abilities ,and the “blood, sweat and tears” she continues to allocate to our LABU.

Plus, Shirley Lee and her team surpassed all expectations of anyone in bringing duplicate bridge to life for 8 tables of new players. Her due diligence with the new players and the promoters of the games enabled all participants to put their game face on and their best foot forward.

It is obvious “A” lot of loving works went on behind the scenes. Everyone surely deserve “props” for their dedication and caring... the LA BU Officers, the Education Committee, and the Rank and File...Everyone.

Losing Trick Count

The Losing-Trick Count (LTC) is an alternative to the high card point (HCP) method of hand evaluation to be used in situations where shape and fit are of more significance than HCP in determining the optimum level of a suit contract - it should only be used after a fit has been found. Based upon a set of empirical rules for counting, the number of "losing tricks" held by a partnership is first estimated and deducted from 24; the result is the number of tricks the partnership can expect to take when playing in their established suit .

The Negative Double:

A takeout-like Double by responder, popularized by Alvin Roth and Tobias Stone in 1957 (then called the "Sputnik"). Like the Russian satellite, the Sputnik indicates the bid was "out of the world". The Negative Double is used over the opponents' overcall after partner's opening bid. Below is a comparison between the Takeout Double and the Negative Double.
